Factitious Disorders (Munchausen by Proxy Abuse): Interview with Expert Dr. Marc Feldman and Survivor Jordyn Hope
Today’s interview explores Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA), better known as Munchausen by Proxy Abuse (or Medical Child Abuse), which is an often-lethal form of child abuse that is not as rare as you’d like to think. Expert Dr. Marc Feldman and Expert/Survivor Jordyn Hope walk us through this wildly sensationalized, yet highly misunderstood, area. Jordyn also shares their amazing story of being a victim of Munchausen by Proxy Abuse and how they are now an advocate for others. About Dr. Feldman:
Dr. Feldman is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. A Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Feldman is an international expert in medical deception, including factitious disorder imposed on self or another; medical child abuse; and malingering. He is the author of five books and more than one hundred peer-reviewed published articles. His latest book is entitled, DYING TO BE ILL: TRUE STORIES OF MEDICAL DECEPTION. Dr. Feldman is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School and completed his psychiatric residency at Duke University Medical Center, where he later joined the faculty. He was formerly Vice Chair and Medical Director in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Feldman was a member of the workgroups for the revisions of the factitious disorder diagnoses for both DSM-5-TR and ICD-11.
About Jordyn Hope:
Jordyn Hope is a student at St. Louis University working simultaneously on their BSW and MSW. They are a survivor of Munchausen by Proxy (MBP) child abuse. Jordyn is an expert on Munchausen by Proxy abuse and is a board member for the MBP Committee through APSAC where they work alongside other experts in the field. They are an independent contractor for Munchausen Support. Jordyn facilitates support groups for survivors of MBP, manages intake and referrals from those impacted by MBP, and they provide coaching to survivors. They give presentations around the US for professionals to help aid in the treatment and care of victims/survivors of MBP.
